United Nations: Immediate Intervention Now – Avaaz Petition

Tibetans living in and outside Tibet urge the United Nations for an immediate intervention on the situation in Tibet. Since the People’s Republic of China’s illegal occupation of Tibet in 1949, the Communist Party has enforced a series of campaigns and policies to systematically stifle Tibetan culture, language, identity, spiritual traditions and destroy Tibet’s fragile environment. Tibet today faces a life and death struggle. Over 1.2 million Tibetans have lost their lives and Tibetans in Tibet today continue be oppressed and discriminated through various policies designed to marginalize the Tibetan people and wipe out our religion and culture.

On August 28, a 55 year old woman from Nguru Village in Eastern Tibet, Tashi Kyi set herself on fire. She later died that day. This is the seventh self immolation inside Tibet this year. Since 2009, 149 Tibetans have sacrificed their lives self immolation for their nations freedom inside Tibet and in exile. These brave men and women who set themselves on fire have called for the ‘Return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet’, ‘Independence for Tibet’ and ‘Freedom in Tibet’ etc. However, instead of addressing the demands of these courageous Tibetans, the Chinese government has tightened its control over Tibet and vehimently criticises the Tibetan spiritual teacher His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It has also stepped up its propaganda around the world by investing billions of dollars into mass media and other machineries. It is unfortunate that the United Nations and the governments of the world have ignored this crisis and the cries of the Tibetan people – but its not too late to act.

In order to create awareness about the critical situation in Tibet; to support the demands and aspirations of the self-immolators; and to show solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet, the Tibetan Youth Congress has initiated a “Indefinite Hunger Strike”, in India’s capital Delhi from Sept 10. United Nations must act immediately and hold China responsible for their actions in Tibet.

Our demands to the United Nations are as follows:
1. Urge the United Nations to raise the issue of Tibet at its General Assembly and Human Rights Council Session
2. Urge China to address the demands of the Self Immolations in Tibet
3. Urge China to give evidence that the 11th Panchen Lama Gendun Choekyi Nyima is alive
4. Send a fact finding UN delegation to assess the current critical situation in Tibet
5. Urge China to release all political prisoners

United Nations cannot remain silent on the issue of Tibet anymore. Tibet continues to burn. We urge the United Nations for an Immediate Intervention in Tibet. We hope that you will do the right thing.

TYC Statement on the death of Tulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche

Tibetan Youth Congress the largest pro-independece Tibetan organization in exile expresses shock and sadness on the news of the death of Tulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche. TYC states that, “Rinpoche was a true Tibetan hero sacrificing his life for the people and cause of Tibet”, and demands “a clear detailed explanation on the circumstance leading to his demise from the Chinese Government.”

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s health has been deteriorating over many years but China denied him medical care and failed to respond to the application for medical parole, which was made in 2014. He was not only a simple monk but also an advocate and activist for social and religious rights and reforms, as well as environmental protection. Throughout his time in prison Tulku Tenzin Delek had consistently stated his innocence and in an unprecedented act of devotion and belief in his innocence, 40,000 Tibetans in Tibet risked their security in 2009 by signing a petition demanding justice for their teacher.

Local Tibetans have widely believed that he was wrongfully arrested and convicted in 2002 primarily because he was becoming a respected and popular champion of Tibetan interests which the local Chinese Communist Party saw as a challenge to its authority. Zhou Yongkang, former member of China’s 17th Politburo Standing Committee and the country’s powerful security chief who was recently convicted for abuse of power was the Party boss in Tibet at the time of Tulku Tenzin Delek’s arrest and many believe that Zhou had a hand in his detention.

TYC President Tenzing Jigme said that, “todays unfortunate news clearly reaffirms TYC’s long standing view that the Chinese communist government cannot be trusted and therefore we have to step up and intensify our campaigns for the freedom of our nation and our people.” The death of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche should serve as a reminder for all of us that the Chinese government will never hand us our freedom effortlessly but that we have to fight to win back our freedom.

Tibetan Youth Congress demands the Chinese government to:
– Officially confirm Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s death and demand an enquiry into the circumstances of his death. He was a political prisoner at the top of the priority listing for a number of countries; his passing must be officially acknowledged and the causes investigated.
– Support the family’s request for Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s body to be returned to them, so that traditional Tibetan burial rites can be carried out.

Statement of TYC on the 56th Anniversary of the 10th March Uprising

Today Tibetans all over the world gather to commemorate an unforgettable event in the history of our country. We observe and honor the thousands of valiant Tibetan men and women who on this day in 1959 filled the streets of Lhasa to revolt against the Chinese Communist occupation forces. On that day, Tibetans stood up against the Chinese government with the courage and determination to proclaim and protect the Tibetan Government and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Thousands of Tibetans lost their lives and therefore as we commemorate this day, Tibetan Youth Congress pays our deepest respect and homage to our brothers and sisters inside Tibet and in exile who have sacrificed their lives through various forms of protests against China’s illegal occupation of our nation and vow to continue our work for the freedom and independence of Tibet and the Tibetan people until the Tibet issue is resolved.

Tibet was brutally occupied and the Tibetan people fought back. This resistance continues to this day. These courageous Tibetan’s resistances remind us and the rest of the world that it was not a “peaceful liberation” as China claims. Therefore, we take the opportunity to honor and dedicate today to the Tibetans inside Tibet who day in and day out endure the illegal Occupation yet continue to find ingenious ways to resist it for our freedom – for our future.

The Tibetan people continue to be oppressed, discriminated and denied even basic human rights. Tibetans have been systematically arrested, detained, tortured, and killed for merely carrying out non- violent protests against China. The brutality of the regime and its intolerance towards political dissent is evident in the way it has over the decades treated political prisoners. Most recently on 5 December 2014 Tenzin Choedak, died two days after he was released on “medical parole” nine years short of the completion of his 15-year prison term. In fact he was barely alive at the time he was returned to his family. Choedak had reportedly dislocated jawbones, damaged kidneys and was vomiting blood. He was physically emaciated and had suffered brain injury. Every bone in his feet was broken. According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy this suggests that he may have been subjected to the falaka, or foot whipping torture technique. The falaka involves beating the sole’s of the victim’s feet with a heavy cable or whatever else is available. It causes extreme pain up the victim’s body and the feet to swell. Choedak was imprisoned for his alleged involvement in the popular 2008 Uprising where hundreds of Tibetans lost their lives. Prior to his arrest, Choedak worked with a European non-governmental organization associated with International Red Cross. His responsibilities were mainly environmental protection in Lhasa and Shigatse region of Tibet. He was only 34 years old.

Despite the knowledge of brutality and risk to their lives, Tibetans inside Tibet continue to resist and fight. Tibet continues to burn. The number of self-immolations inside Tibet since 2009 has now reached an unprecedented 136 with the latest activist Kelsang Yeshi, a 38 year-old monk who self immolated on 23 December 2014. His slogan at the time of burning were the most common expressions demanding the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans. These self-immolations protests clearly indicate that Tibetans inside Tibet want freedom and independence from the current illegal occupation of Tibet. The Tibetans inside Tibet are doing every bit they can to express their aspirations. Those of us living in exile have a responsibility to fulfill those aspirations and towards our movement.

10 March is a day when we reflect upon history and the events that unfolded in Lhasa. We must understand what the uprising was for and most importantly when we observe this Tibetan National Uprising Day, we must work to fulfill the wishes and demands of those that sacrificed their lives for Tibet. 10 March is also a day to remember who we are and where we are headed to and as a Tibetan to pledge your commitment and responsibility for your country – and in doing so, understand that unity, optimism and strategy lies at the core of our struggle. We call upon Tibetans living in exile and inside Tibet to remain united and steadfast in our movement. The Chinese government will never be able to break the will and spirit of the Tibetan people. Tibetans in Tibet and in exile remain more defiant than ever and today we send a message to China that until and unless the Beijing government changes its stance on Tibet, the Tibetan people will continue to rise and resist and our Revolution will grow stronger and bigger.

Finally, on this day we pay our humble respect and tribute to our spiritual leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. We Tibetans remain forever grateful for the work he has done for Tibet, the Tibetan people and humanity. The message of love and compassion that His Holiness preaches is the ultimate way to bring peace in the 21st century across the world. We pray for the long life of His Holiness and wish him a very Happy Birthday as he turns 80 on July 6 later this year. On behalf of Tibetans inside Tibet and in exile – Thank you, your Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

TYC Official Statement on International Human Rights Day 2014

Today, as the world commemorates International Human Rights Day, the situation inside Tibet remains tense and perhaps one could arguably say that Tibet is in its most critical period in the nation’s history. The Chinese Government easily evade condemnation despite introducing alarming draconian and oppressive rule due to the failure of intervention by international human rights groups and international media. Paradoxically if such a calamity was unfolding anywhere else in the democratic world, it would have created chaos and uproar in the international community.

On 1 November 2014, reports emerged from Eastern Tibet stated that the Meruma Intermediate People’s Court in Ngaba County sentenced eight Tibetans up to five years’ imprisonment. They were charged with murder for their alleged involvement with self-immolations by Tibetans without a fair trial. Since 2009, 133 Tibetans have self-immolated inside Tibet sacrificing their lives in protest of China’s illegal occupation and for Tibet’s freedom, independence and return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet. The Chinese government has responded with intimidation, torture, arrests, detention and harassment of family, friends and even co-villagers.

In October this year, the new United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein at his first media briefing expressed his intentions to visit Tibet and announced that he was in communication with the Chinese authorities regarding the matter. The Tibetan Youth Congress has for years lobbied for support at the United Nations and also urged and demanded for officials and independent experts to make a visit. Therefore, we welcome this indication made by the UN human rights chief and urge his excellency that should the Chinese government allow and extend an invitation, he ought to be wary that his visit be not made into another propaganda and publicity stunt favoring the Chinese Communist Party.

Meanwhile, inside Tibet, hundreds of Tibetans on 3 November 2014 gathered outside the Chinese government building in Sangchu County, Amdo, eastern Tibet to protest against unfair and unequal compensation for land in Malinthang. According to reports, a large number of Tibetans staged a protest displaying banners and raising slogans outside the government building, where the high-ranking Chinese officials from Kanlho Prefecture were scheduled to visit. China’s discriminatory practices and denial of equal opportunity for Tibetans continue unabated. The Tibetans were reportedly paid lesser rates of compensation than their Chinese counterparts. Reports of sporadic protests taking place all over Tibet by monks, students, nomads and ordinary Tibetans clearly show that Tibetans are not happy with the present rule in Tibet.

Today we stand with the people of Hong Kong, East Turkestan, Inner Mongolia, Taiwan as well as inside China who continue to suffer under the brutal and inhumane policies of the Chinese Government and extend our support and solidarity in their quest for democracy and freedom. It is time that the corrupt Chinese Government realizes that their days are numbered and should therefore review their hard line policies and move towards making positive reforms according to the wishes and demands of the people. The Tibetan Youth Congress has persistently maintained that the Chinese government cannot be trusted and today events in Hong Kong are testimony to it.

10 December is also a day of joyous ceremony for Tibetans all over the world. It commemorates the conferment of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1989. It has been twenty-five years since and while great strides have been made to improve human rights situations across the world in this span of time, it is evident that the situation inside Tibet has only headed for the worst. Today, the Tibetan Youth Congress calls upon leaders of the world and International human rights organizations to seriously review China’s illegal occupation of Tibet and their current policies. We urge the international community to take a stand and call for appropriate actions against the Chinese government until they are genuinely committed about resolving the issue of Tibet. The world needs to do more. A multi-lateral approach is the only way to hold the Chinese government accountable for their actions. We believe that change is possible.

Finally we would like to convey our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and congratulate him on this 25th Anniversary of the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize. We remain forever grateful and thank him for all that he has done for Tibet and the Tibetan people and offer our prayers for his long life.

In the past few months, activities to disrupt the unity and harmony of Tibetans from Dorjee Shugden groups have rapidly increased. They have been organizing carefully orchestrated protests at various cities across the world where His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been engaged in Public events and talks. The slogans used by members of the group are despicable and have no truth whatsoever. Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) in its Statement released on May 23, 2014 condemned these activities by the Dorjee Shugden group.

Lately the group has been targeting TYC and is trying to tarnish the reputation of the largest Tibetan NGO in exile. They have set up Dorjee Shugden Tibetan Youth Congress page on social media sites Facebook and Youtube. False allegations and anti Dalai Lama activities, comments and videos are released through these sites. TYC would like to make it clear that we have no relations with the Dorjee Shugden group so called ‘Dorjee Shugden Tibetan Youth Congress’ and are not associated with these sites. We ask the group to stop using the name of our organization to further their propaganda.  TYC will formally launch a complaint with the social media sites and ask that they be taken down immediately.

Formed in 1970, TYC remains the most politically active organization in exile working for the freedom of the Tibetan people. The Chinese government has time and again charged TYC with baseless allegations and has accused TYC of inciting violent riots and the self-immolations inside Tibet.  TYC has always maintained that those accusations hold no truth and the organization continues to adhere to the principles of non-violence in order to achieve our goals. It is clear that both the Chinese government and the Dorjee Shugden group are working towards creating conflict amongst Tibetans. But they will not win.

The Tibetan people are bonded by our faith and trust in our spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and we will not be divided by such futile efforts. We are more than just a cause. We are a people whose resilience should not be taken for granted and today with the courage and spirit of Tibetans inside Tibet, the Tibetans in exile and in Tibet remain more united than ever. Tibetan Youth Congress reminds all Tibetans to remain vigilant, attentive and cautious during visits of HH the Dalai Lama to your cities and we urge you to step up security and also partake in educational awareness raising campaigns regarding this issue.
